CALLEJO 2008
Cuatro Meses en Barrica
Information on the 2008 vintage
The weather conditions for the 2008 growing season began with a cold winter with low rainfall. Spring was the wettest of recent years. Rain in May and June together with some unseasonably low temperatures delayed budding in the vines. Summer was dry with mild temperatures, which favoured a slow ripening of the grapes. The harvesting was therefore delayed until October 20th, a later date than average, but which enabled the grapes to achieve complete ripeness with balanced acidities and great fruit aroma in the wines.
Vinification and ageing
The picking was carried out in cold weather conditions, which allowed the grapes to be brought in at low temperature and therefore natural conditions for cold, pre-fermentation maceration. Careful work at the sorting table was essential this year to eliminate any damaged bunches. The juices were fermented with indigenous yeasts at low temperatures; and at the end of the alcoholic fermentation, the skins stayed in contact with the wine for a further 5 days before the wine was run off. The wine was aged in French and American oak barrels for four months before being bottled in May 2009.
